The Darkness Screens and Video Trailer

The Darkness Trailer and Screenshots for the hardcore gamer
No, not the band; the game. 2KGames was kind enough to give us these 4 new screenshots as well as a trailer for The Darkness. You may recognize The Darkness if you look through you Xbox 360 Theme settings because The Darkness was supposed to have been released a year ago and they included it in the original theme packs that shipped with the Xbox 360. Sadly, after Majesco took a beating with Advent Rising and Psychonauts (GREAT GAME) they sold the rights off and changed their focus to mobile gaming. But Older Hardcore Gamers who read comics will remember that The Darkness was one of Top Cow's greatest achievements and there was even a cross-over or two with Lara Croft from Tomb Raider. Having met Marc Silvestri once or twice I can tell you I doubt that he would allow his name to be tied to something that didn't live up to his expectations and tarnish his baby. Hopefully, The Darkness will be able to stand tall among Marvel Ultimate Alliance and Spider-Man 2 as recent comic-based video games that were actually any good. (Sorry, Superman you let us down. Tornadoes? Really?) Brush up on the history of The Darkness over at Wikipedia.

New Addition to the Site: The Guides
The Hardcore Gamer Video Game News By host on 2/27/2007 10:16 AM
The response to our line of guides for the hardcore gamer has been so overwhelming that we have launched a new section to the site, "The Guides."

The first guide we moved over was the Rainbow Six Vegas Guide. Which has received an amazing new feature that no one else is offering, the Rainbow Six Vegas Rank Calculator. In the coming months and weeks we will be moving all of our current guides, (Oblivion, Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and Dead Rising), to the new section. Also, look for brand new guides on some of the biggest games currently available, such as Viva Pinata and Crackdown.

If anyone is looking for advice or a guide on a specific game, feel free to suggest a topic because I'm sure one of the hardcore gamers on our staff can help you out.

Tomb Raider Anniversary Video and Wallpapers

tomb Raider Anniversary wallpapers, trailer and press release
In case you haven't heard, we loved Tomb Raider Legends in our review and we couldn't be happier that they are pulling a George Lucas and revisiting the original PS1 classic; Tomb Raider. The Tomb Raider series had become a shadow of its former self and Tomb Raider Legend was a great entry into the series that really put the franchise back on track. So much so that Eidos decided to take the original game and put a fresh new coat on it using the new Tomb Raider Legend engine. We can't wait to see some of the re-imagining of the puzzles and storylines especially if they going to tie it in closer to the arc they created with Legend.

The videos are up above in The Hardcore Gamer Video Player, the Tomb Raider Wallpapers are in our Repository of free video game wallpapers, and the press release is below. One note about the press release, nowhere does it say Xbox 360 (hard to believe) and it is rife with spelling errors (easy to believe). Enjoy.

Official Press Release:
In 1996, the original Tomb Raider was launched. The 3D game design, controls and graphics were truly ground breaking for their time. Furthermore, gamers were also presented with a unique, female human playable character with which they could become emotionally attached, Lara Croft. The original Tomb Raider sold over seven million copies and is still heralded as an absolute classic and one of the best action adventure games ever. Tomb Raider defined the PlayStation and changed the way that people played games.

Japanese Wii to Receive Neo-Geo and MSX Games
The Hardcore Gamer Video Game News By host on 2/23/2007 1:42 PM
Neo Geo and MSX games are coming to your Wii
Hardcore Gamers, you need to be sitting for this one. Neo Geo and MSX are coming to the Wii Virtual Console. At least in Japan, for now. This is incredible news for gamers. Now we just need them to announce the Samurai Showdowns, Fatal Furys, and Metal Slugs from Neo Geo and then follow those up with the Castlevania and Metal Gear from the MSX and we can die happy. Actually, that isn't true. We can die a happy gamer when they announce the Wii Wireless Arcade Stick to go with the Neo Geo releases.

Wow, first Wing Commander and now this? This really feels like old home week here at the hardcore gamer. What is left for Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony to grab? Coleco, Intellivision, 3DO and what else? How about some Gameboy, Gameboy Color and Gameboy Advance?

Neo Geo and MSX are coming to a Wii near you

Wing Commander Arena Xbox Live Trailer Already!
The Hardcore Gamer Video Game News By host on 2/23/2007 9:37 AM
Damn, that was fast! Here it is, good Lord, here it is. The Wing Commander Arena Xbox Live Trailer. This isn't only shaping up fast, but it is looking really good too, if you aren't expecting anything other than spaceships connecting it to the franchise. How did this famous franchise get this far along and no one knew? Very impressive, EA. Very impressive indeed. It makes a gamer wonder what other famous long-dead franchises are currently in development.

Back to the trailer; Is it just me or does this look more like Geometry Wars, Marble Blast Ultra, and Wing Commander combined? Seriously, this could've been named Battlestar Galactica at this point, because that is how much the game seems to have in common with the original franchise at this point. No in-cockpit view? No wingmen? At this point I have to wonder if there are even Kilrathi in this game? Watch the trailer closely, it looks like everyone is fighting on the same plane, rather than truly dog-fighting. I hope this isn't a crappy, generic Xbox Live Arcade title that someone slapped the Wing Commander name on and called it a day, but it sure seems to be heading down that path...

Wing Commander Has Been Reborn on Xbox Live Arcade

Wing Commander is Coming to Xbox Live, HOBBES
HOBBES!!! One of my top 5 games ever is finally getting a new coat of paint; Wing Commander is coming to Xbox Live! (At least that's what Kotaku is saying.)

An entire generation of gamers don't have a clue just how epic and deep the PC flying genre used to be back in the day. I bought a brand new, powerhouse, cutting-edge Pentium 120 from Gateway back in 1995 just to play Wing Commander III and that powerhouse of a system, all $2900 of it, is still better than the PS3. No joke. On top of that, if I had spent $2900 on Wing Commander III and IV and never played another game or actually produced anything productive on that speed-demon P120, it would have STILL been worth the price just to play those two games (& Tie Fighter). That is how good the Wing Commander series used to be, back when Origin owned the world...

My first gamertag, Paladin, was from Wing Commander III and that name stuck for 5 years before i was bestowed with Paco. And there is a reason for that, Wing Commander is that damn good. Through great acting, awesome CG and multi-path endings made Wing Commander one of the first games that actually caused me to care about the characters. I can still remember the shock I felt on the final mission of both games, the cheese factor of Aeris and Cloud don't hold a candle to the drama that Wing Commander stirred up in my soul.

I haven't played it in almost a decade but I'm sure that it holds up pretty well. I know Musashi is there with me on this one and the moment Wing Commander launches my life as a gamer will end. I don't care if God of War 3 and Rainbow Six: New York are ...
