Age of Conan - First Impressions

INTRO
Let me start out by saying that I was really looking forward to this game. The previews were good, the tidbits leaking out from behind the veil of the NDA during beta were generally positive, and the screenshots and videos were awesome. Plus, the cherry on top is that Conan of Cimmeria was my favorite hero from childhood, even more so than a wizard that goes off on quests with a gang of midgits, or a talking lion that abducts children and takes them off to his fantasy world "so that you might know me better". By the time I reached high school, I had already read all the original Conan books written by R.E. Howard, as well as many of the new ones by modern authors, including those by the late, great Robert Jordan. I had my collection of Conan comic books, as well as my poster of Arnold in full costume and muscles, complete with hulking, sweaty, man-boobs. To summarize, Funcom would have to royally this game up for me to not like it.

Well, they certainly did not it up, but while they really did a great job of capturing the ruthlessness and brutality of Hyboria, and creating an MMO with some interesting features, they did in fact, fail to create a game that reaches out and grabs me by the short and curlies.

Overall gameplay is not bad at all. Once you crank down the graphics settings so that you get a playable framerate, the game runs smoothly, and even during peak hours there was only the rare la ...

MMO News Roundup
Massive Load By HCG Dreadsorrow on 5/20/2008 11:30 PM
Lets have a chuckle sandwich today. By that I mean let's start off and end with something funny.

WORLD OF WARCRAFT
First, here is a rather well-done WoW cartoon. Who needs alcohol when you have MMOs?

GENERAL NEWS
Here is a very interesting article outlining a five-year forecast for MMOs. If you think that some of these things are way too far off in the distant future, bear in mind the extraordinarily long development cycle for an MMO of any value. The new titles we will be able to play 5 years from today are just now starting to be brainstormed over pizza and beer in meeting rooms. And also considering that the next generation of consoles should be out by then, coupled with the ongoing breakneck pace of PC hardware development, I am super-excited to see what virtual worlds we will have to explore.

STARGATE WORLDS
This is another article about Stargate Worlds, but this one gives a few tidbits about Project: Ascension, which promises to allow players who have built up equity with their character in one game title to transfer their toon and all their loot over to another entirely different game o ...

Hell Freezes over - Konami Announces US release of MGS4 LE PS3!
Shelf Life By HCG Musashi on 5/15/2008 7:49 PM

After announcing over a month ago on the Official Playstation Blog that the Metal Gear Solid 4 Premium Pack - featuring a gun metal grey PS3 and Dual Shock 3 controller - would be released "in very limited quantities" in the US, I was beginning to think they'd never tell us how we could get our hands on one of these bundles of joy.

Well, today is the day, kiddies. Konami's US site posted a press release today formally announcing the release of the limited editon bundle. They also listed what the limited editon bundles will contain:

  • Gun Metal Gray PLAYSTATION®3 with a 40GB Hard drive.
  • Gray DUALSHOCK®3 wireless controller
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition
  • The Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Limited Edition game, which includes Metal Gear Online, enabling you to take part in the ultimate multiplayer squad based tactical shooter, an exclusive Blu-ray disc including over 2 hours of additional content - "Hideo Kojima's Gene" a behind-the-scenes vision of Hideo Kojima's production team & game, "The Making of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots" documentary and the official Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots CD Soundtrack, including 16 never-before-released tracks by Harry Gregson-Williams, Nobuko Toda, and Ennio Morricone
More details after the jump. ...

Realtime Worlds Reaquires Rights to 'All Points Bulletin'
Massive Load By HCG Dreadsorrow on 5/12/2008 4:45 PM

I don't know how I missed this one, but here it is anyway.

Check out Warcry's interview with Realtime World's Walter Kong.

In the latter half of April, Realtime Worlds, the creators of Crackdown, have announced that they have reacquired all rights to All Points Bulletin (APB), the police vs. criminals MMO under development since 2005.

Not only that, but they also nailed down a whopping $50 million bucks in financing, plus are building the game around the Unreal 3 engine. This ensures that unless they are complete smacktards, they will have absolutely no excuse for not producing an MMO of total pwnage.

For those of us that have been enjoying GTA4, but yet telling ourselves that it would be even more uber if instead of just a few other people to play with, we had a few thousand in a truly sandbox environment. APB may be the answer to those MMO enthusiasts that are bored all to ing hell of orcs and elves.

The original timeline for this title gave a release of 2008, but with all the hooplah, hopefully put to rest for good, I wouldn't expect this game until sometime in 2009, but that may change once we start gertting more updates, previews, devlog and the such in the coming months.

Pre-order Hulk at GameStop and Get Red Hulk Exclusively for Xbox 360
The Soap Box By HCG Paco on 5/11/2008 6:00 PM
I'm guessing Red hulk will be playable via a code like their recent Rainbow "Exclusive" gun. Be wary though if it is, Gamestop preorder codes for Xbox 360 have had a track record of disabling achievements in the past. Buy be warned.
