I Formally Invite BioWare to Kiss My Ass

Read the article here, then follow along for my commentary.

First of all, to BioWare, here ya go buddy!

Screw you Bioware!
Let me just say that I was looking forward to Spore. I would probably have bought it the first day. Now I don't care if the game comes with coupon for a free hummer from Tricia Helfer. I wouldn't buy this ing game for anything.

I am ing sick to death of being treated like a goddamn criminal by media companies that I have given my hard-earned money to in good faith for their product. I have bought BioWare products in the past and enjoyed them very much. I will no longer buy your crap, since I will have to prove to you over and over again that I am not stealing what I have paid for.

In the 14 years that I have owned my truck, never once has Ford ever come to me and demanded to see my title. Never once has Hitachi demanded to see the receipt for my TV. Never once have I had to prove to Roomfull Express that I am the rightful owner of my living room sofa, or else they would not let me sit on it any more.

Don't you bastards go and blame EA for this either. Everybody already knows they suck donkey balls, especially with their onerous copy prevention bullshit. I already went a few rounds with those assholes over a game that I paid for (Battle for Middle Earth) not running on my system because I dared to install a DVD burner on my computer.

You, BioWare smacktards, you disappoint me greatly. Mostly because I expected better from you. You disingenuous pieces of turd imply that I am a criminal unless I verify that I am not? Well then you can kiss my fat, hairy ass. And just for you, I will forget to wipe.

Now that takes the cake for audacity. Here's a little secret: every copy protection EVER devised by PC companies has been defeated. From Xerox'ing your friends game manual in the 80's to reverse-engineering StarForce or SecuROM. Also, Release group A is trying to beat Release group B to the punch for bragging rights, which means dozens of very, very intelligent, computer savvy people are working around the clock to be the first to conquer whatever new copy protection there is. Until PC game (or all game for that matter) go to a download-only format (which will never happen) then this game of chess is going to go on and on.

Look, I can see both sides - you've worked your ass off to make a great game and you want to see the fruits of your labor (a.k.a a fat wallet), so it's a kick in the balls to see a bunch of guys have posted a cracked version of the game you worked so hard up on a 0-Day newsgroup server. So you can argue to point that this kills profits, jobs and creates a gaming world where only the mega-studios like EA can survive.

But on the other hand - I doubt that these descisions to use such assinine copy-protection are being made by the people who actually made the game. This is another example of corporate jackasses sticking their faces in where they don't belong. All they're concerned about is the bottom line and how to increase it. I'd love to see what they think of having to punch in a new 10-digit code to their luxury vehicle ever 10 days and drive it at least 10 miles in 10 days or the engine seizes up. It's the same stipulations they're imposing on Spore.

So what happens if you move to a location that doesn't offer internet access or doesn't offer the type you want? Are you supposed to sign up for DSL if that's all you can get just to play a game that you already paid for? Throw in complimentary satellite based, wireless internet access with all the hardware needed and then you can justify this type of "protection".

It's a shame - I've financially supported BioWare all along the way, and they've produced some incredible games (with the help of Black Isle - RIP) - but I can't see any good coming out of this. Piracy is an unavoidable factor and always will be in a free society such as ours. Suck it up, Bioware and don't pass the problem onto your prospective buyers by treating them like children who need checked-up on every 10 days to make sure they're not being naughty.

Nail meet head. One last point, piracy isn't always a bad thing. It spreads your game around faster than anything else. You could not begin to count the number of games that have been given high marks on the IIRC and Alt.bin back in the day that rose through the foamy crap around them to succeed only because of word of mouth. Some of my favorite franchises that I religiously support today were copies of games from yesterday. Half-life comes to mind. Way back when it was a joke before it got the fan fare it has now. Quake was dominating everything, Unreal blew our minds and here was Sierra publishing the little engine that could. Sierra of all publishers!

Gabriel Knight and King's Quest be damned if they didn't pull it off. But not because of the marketing. Not because of the gamerpic, crosspromotion world of now. No, it was because someone dropped a burned CD with the now famous Black Mesa logo written in Sharpie across the top copy on my desk at school and said "You won't fucking believe this." I even remember saying that there were too many shooters out or at least we thought so at the time. PCs were king and so was sharing, but look at us now. No one shares like they used to, PCs are dying and I am a loyal Half-life fan who would thank every member of that Gear Box team personally if he could. And by the way, I went back and bought not one, but two copies of the original Half Life since those days. (Not to mention every expansion pack and upgrade since)
